Muchalls Castle lies approximately 5 miles north of Stonehaven. And even though it lies about 1 mile inland, it commands great views over the North Sea.
Muchalls Castle is classed as one of the baronial antiquities of Scotland.
After finishing the work at Crathes Castle, Sir Archibald Burnet of Leys aquired the land at Muchalls from the Frasers. In 1619 he began building a castle and in 1627 his son, Sir Thomas Burnet finished the project.
The castle is built in Renaissance Style. The ceilings are covered in the same delicate plaster moldings as used in Moray House, Winton, Pinkie and Glamis Castle.
