The rocks off the coast belong to the Dalradian supergroup, as does most of Scotland. Here you can see original sedimentary rock.
The rocks consist largely of psammitic Schists and Greywackes, but you can also find some pelitic Schists and Phyllites.
All photographs have been taken within a few yards of each other, showing the variety of structures.
![]() | Psammitic (sandy) Schist. The original rock liquefied under high temperatures and pressures, folding over to create a distinctive pattern. Occasionally garnets and tourmaline can be found embedded in the rock. |
![]() | Pelitic (muddy) Schist containing quartz veins. Salts and shale dissolved under high temperatures and pressures. |
